Samuel McKee letter, 1821 July 14.

Samuel McKee, a prominent Kentucky attorney and one-time U.S. Congressman, wrote this letter from Frankfort, Kentucky, July 14, 1821, to P.W. Brown on behalf of his client, John Rout, concerning Kentucky lands owned by the latter. According to the letter, Rout apparently purchased public lands from the government under an act of Congress passed circa 1820. The letter also referred to a sale of land by Rout to Henry Speed.

Samuel McKee was born near Lexington, Virginia, in 1774. After formal schooling and studying law in his native state, McKee began practicing law in Somerset, Kentucky. He served as surveyor of Pulaski County, then moved to Lancaster in Garrard County where he also practiced law. From 1802 to 1808 he served in the Kentucky House of Representatives.
